Zebulon, North Carolina has been my family's home for seven generations. Needless to say, we all have a strong commitment to the people of the Zebulon area and surrounding communities. Since January of 1989, the Massey family has pledged our commitment to funeral service for the people who live and work in this area.
When I was a little boy, Norman Screws was the funeral director here. He was a friend to everyone. Norman was a compassionate man who was proud of his profession. Norman was proud of the people in the community that he served. He taught me about the needs and the expectations of families when they had lost a loved one. Through Norman Screws, I learned that the foundation of modern day funeral service was centered in the care of surviving family members at their time of loss. The model that Norman Screws taught me as a funeral director was one of professionalism and genuine caring and respect for families. Norman Screws taught me that caring for families comes naturally.
I began my career in funeral service in August of 1976 by serving my apprenticeship. The following fall, I enrolled in Mortuary College in Atlanta at Gupton-Jones College of Mortuary Science and returned to Wake County as a licensed mortician, confident that funeral service was the profession that I would commit my life to.
Through the years, I observed that many funeral homes in the area were changing the focus of their attention from serving families to diversification of the funeral home into other businesses. The service and personal attention to families clearly suffered in this transition. It seemed that funeral homes had lost sight of their mission in their effort to diversify.
In the summer of 1988, shortly after the birth of my daughter – my father, grandmother and I pledged our family’s commitment to funeral service for the people of our community. Massey Funeral Home was born out of this commitment and the basic principles of funeral service that Norman Screws had taught me. |
